Testing Operations Manager (Lubbock, TX)

Chromatin is seeking a highly motivated individual to become an integral member of our Sorghum Breeding Team in Lubbock, Texas as a Testing Operations Manager. The Testing Operations Manager (TOM) is responsible for day to day operations of Chromatin's large, multi site hybrid evaluation program. Product advancement candidates to be evaluated include entries developed for the renewable "Cleantech" market (2nd generation biofuels, high value chemicals and thermo chemical applications) as well as conventional animal feeding applications. The TOM will have responsibility for recruitment, retention, training, and development of regular full time and temporary personnel working in his/her area as well as some budget and capital project management. The incumbent will locate suitable trial sites, manage grower relationships, organize & plant trials, and monitor/manage the crop during the growing season. The TOM will collect both growing season and harvest data as well as analyze and record information on experimental sorghum hybrids.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that all staff is trained and are compliant with Chromatin safety policies and procedures.
  • Acquire and maintain adequate facilities and equipment for effective and efficient program function.
  • Manage a high quality testing program which will lead to the development of improved Sorghum hybrids for Chromatin's expanding biomass business as well as Sorghum Partners product portfolio.
  • Develop general product knowledge of sorghum hybrids in the Chromatin and Sorghum Partners portfolios.
  • Persevere in obtaining high quality results, act in an ethical manner in all business transactions, and maintain a high level of confidentiality with sensitive information.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • B.S. in Agronomy or related field of study and 5 years of agricultural research industry experience.
  • Three or more years experience as a people manager.
  • Broad knowledge of crop production and farming practices.
  • Experience with farm equipment operation and repair strongly preferred.
  • Be a self-starter with team leadership skills.
  • Excellent organizational and record keeping skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of basic statistics and experimental design principles.
  • Strong computer skills related to data acquisition, organization, and data analysis as well as a working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • Capable of working long hours during time-critical periods of the growing season.
  • Class A CDL and noncommercial pesticide applicators license or have the ability to obtain them.
  • The ability to pass a DOT physical and drug test.

  • M.S. in Agronomy or related field of study and more than 5 years of agricultural research experience in an industry setting.
  • Five or more years experience as a people manager.

Cereal Tissue Culture and Transformation (Senior) Scientist

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with extensive tissue culture and transformation experience to join our mini-chromosome plant transformation team in Champaign, IL. Applicants should have significant expertise in cereal transgenic plant production (tissue culture, transformation, greenhouse plant cultivation, phenotypic analysis) as well as solid understanding, and preferably some hands on experience, of molecular biology analyses used to characterize transgenic plants. Knowledge of commercial transgenic plant production and tracking is a plus, and experience in an industry setting is highly desirable. This position will involve both independent research as well as team-based activities for production of commercial transgenic materials. The successful candidate is expected to support aggressive research programs utilizing existing mini-chromosome technology in corn, and contribute to optimizing and implementing mini-chromosome technologies in other cereal crops.

Education, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • PhD with at least five years work experience in cereal transformation
  • Knowledge of molecular assays and (FISH) microscopy experience would be a plus
  • Proven rigor in experimental design, optimization, data interpretation, and analysis
  • High level of organization, attention to detail, and ability to complete tasks
  • Demonstrated record of creative and innovative thinking
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as part of a team

Biomass Research Manager (Bakersfield, CA - Western U.S.)

Chromatin, Inc. (www.chromatininc.com) is seeking a highly motivated individual with the ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary Biomass Research Team across the US. This position will report to the Director of Biomass Production Research and will support biomass/feedstock research production, including biomass harvesting, drying, and transportation. The Biomass Research Manager will administer quality assurance and control, safety, and standard operating procedures. The successful candidate will work with leading edge technology and talented cross-functional scientists seeking to deliver timely and high-quality feedstock to customers.

Responsibilities to include:

  • Coordinate and execute field testing programs to support all phases of biomass production, from field to customer.
  • Maintain company equipment.
  • Lead and improve safety program implementation.
  • Interact with scientists for project-related needs.
  • Support the Company's breeding and seed groups as required.

Plant Breeder (Lubbock, TX)

Chromatin is seeking a highly motivated individual with the ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary sorghum breeding team. The breeder's primary responsibility will be to conduct a sorghum hybrid development breeding program utilizing the latest in breeding technologies to develop superior sorghum products for the emerging "Cleantech" markets. Breeding focus will be on the development of high yielding products with value added traits directed toward thermo chemical/bioenergy, 2nd generation biofuels, and high value chemical applications. This individual will interact with other breeders, genomic and transgenic teams, commercial seed and biomass teams as well as seed operations. The incumbent will oversee the administration of various large breeding projects, and assist in recruiting, training, development and retention of personnel, budget management, and care and maintenance of company assets. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are essential.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage a breeding program that will lead to the development of superior high yielding, stable, commercial sorghum hybrids with specific traits desired by "Cleantech" bioprocessors and other end users.

Research Associate – Chromatin Sorghum Breeding Team (New Deal, TX)
